Wood: Sheesham (Indian rosewood) is the most common choice for the bayan (larger drum) due to its durability and resonance.
Metal: Brass or copper is also used for bayan in some regions, producing deeper bass tones.
Animal Skin: Goat or cowhide is carefully selected for the drum heads, providing tonal clarity and flexibility.
Cord & Paste: Rawhide straps and a special black paste (syahi) made of iron filings, rice, and gum are applied to the drum head to create the tabla’s unique tonal quality.
2. Manufacturing Process
Carving the Shell: The wooden or metal body is shaped into a cylindrical or rounded form.
Preparing the Drum Head: Layers of skin are cut, stretched, and stitched to form the dayan (treble drum) and bayan (bass drum).
Applying Syahi: The black tuning spot is applied meticulously to control pitch and harmonics.
Tuning: Wooden pegs and a hammer are used to tighten cords and adjust pitch.
